Subject Guides

The Southeastern Architectural Archive and the Tulane School of Architecture Library maintain online subject guides intended to help researchers locate information about the built environment.  These subject guides draw from the vast holdings of Tulane University Libraries, as well as from those provided by other repositories.

Architecture Research Guide

This site is intended to help researchers find the resources they need by providing links to article and image databases, library resources, Internet portals and other reference tools.  It augments the Architecture Research Blog begun by Dr. Keli Rylance at the Tulane Libraries. While this page provides quick links to resources, the blog includes narrative examples of the ways in which these resources may be used to solve research problems.  Additionally, it includes citation models for images and text, as well as listings of current events and thematic issues.

Wayne Everard's Guide to "How to Research the History of Your House (or Other Building) in New Orleans" (1986)

Beth Dodd's Guide to "Getting Permission to Use Archival Materials Related to Architectural Works"

University of Texas-Austin Architecture Librarian Beth Dodd has created this concise guide to obtaining requisite permissions to use archival materials beyond the limitations of Fair Use.  When the United States signed its agreement to the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works in 1988, it responded with enactment of the Architectural Works Copyright Act, which provided copyright protection for works of architecture. Protections included all aspects of building design expressed in any tangible medium, including the structure itself, architectural drawings or plans.  Beth Dodd's guide provides advice for obtaining necessary permissions to publish.
