Personal Camera Use

The SEAA allows patrons to use personal cameras in our reading room for documenting architectural records.  This permission is granted for personal use only and solely for research purposes, not for reproduction.  If at any time, you have questions about the handling of the materials you have requested, please do not hesitate to ask.  In many instances, the SEAA retains the only extant copy of the project work.  To minimize adverse effects of light, climate fluctuations, and material damage, the item requested should be handled as little as possible.

We ask that you observe the following procedures:

  • Please notify staff that you wish to use a camera before doing so.
  • To protect fragile holdings and honor donor agreements, SEAA reserves the right to refuse a request.
  • No flash photography is permitted.
  • Any problems or questions regarding the materials should be directed towards SEAA staff.
  • Keep the materials flat on the table at all times, remove jewelry, and do not lean on the surface of SEAA materials.
  • Ask for SEAA staff assistance in moving oversized materials.
  • Possession of images does not convey reproduction rights.  Direct reproduction requests to the Head of the Southeastern Architectural Archive.
  • You assume all copyright responsibility for the images you create and agree to hold harmless Tulane University, its agents, representatives, and employees from any liability to copyright holders (please review copyright restrictions below).
  • Please complete the SEAA's "Personal Camera Use Agreement" form, listing each item photographed, signing and dating document.

United States copyright law (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research.  If a user makes a request for or later uses a reproduction for purposes in excess of fair use, the user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse a copy or reproduction request if, in its opinion, fulfilling the request may violate copyright law.

It is the responsibility of the user to obtain permission to publish from the owner of the copyright (the institution, the creator of the record, the architect or his/her transferees, heirs, legatees, or executors).  The user agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Tulane University, its officers, employees, and agents from and against all claims made by any person asserting that he or she is an owner of copyright.
